Description

Closed with a thick yellow wax capsule, the Petrolo 2019 Bòggina B is a pure expression of Trebbiano, a grape that enjoys a long history in this part of Tuscany. The wine reveals a ripe, waxy bouquet with apricot, honey, saffron and toasted almond. There is a reductive element to the bouquet with crushed stone and flint (especially at this young stage of its life) that makes for a compelling contrast next to the open-knit and creamy density delivered to the palate. This is an unexpected and highly original Tuscan white wine with a quirky, creative personality that matches that of its maker, Luca Sanjust. I suggest another couple years of bottle age. Drink: 2023~2035 - WA93

A complex white, marked by lemon candy, vanilla, smoky oak and apple aromas and flavors. The nose itself is worth the price of admission and it persists, echoing lemon and apple on the finish. Drink now. - WS90

The Winery

Petrolo is a leading wine estate of Tuscany, Italy. It is located a mile or so to the east of Chianti Classico, within the Chianti Colli Aretini zone. It is widely regarded as rivalling many Chianti Classico properties in terms of quality, and is best known for its high-quality Sangiovese-based wines.

The wine portfolio is headed by the Bòggina line which is composed of three varietal wines. Produced only in exceptional vintages, it is a trio of Trebbiano and two Sangiovese wines.

The estate has 31 hectares (76 acres) of vineyards with rocky soils that are typical of the Chianti region. The favorable terroir is aided by the site's altitude of up to 450 meters (1500 feet) above sea level. The sunny exposure allows grapes to develop concentrated flavor compounds with good acidity.

In the winery, fermentations occur in glazed cement vats using native yeasts. Most of the wines are aged in French barriques with some larger 4000-litre wooden casks also used.

Petrolo was acquired by the Bazzocchi family in the 1940s whom have successfully created and developed the esteemed reputation of the estate that it has today.  - Information from Wine Searcher
