The Winery

Former owner of Chateau de Grandmont (a wine estate in the French wine region of Burgundy), French Reunion Island born entrepreneur  Georges Michel was already heartedly enamoured by wine when he and his family decided to move to New Zealand in 1999.

Georges Michel Wine Estate was established in 1997 and situated in the ‘Golden Mile’ , a micro terroir which denotes the central route of the Rapaura road area, renowned for the production of consistent  best flavored fruit of the Marlborough wine region.

The first Sauvignon Blanc was released in 1998 followed by an oak-aged Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir . In 1999, our Sauvignon Blanc was awarded a double Gold Award at the San Francisco International Wine Competition.

SWAN MICHEL – WINEMAKER

Georges’ daughter, Swan, has headed the winemaking team since 2005. After gaining her degree in Viticulture and Oenology in Lincoln University, she went to France for the 2004 vintage at Chateau le Grand Verdus (Bordeaux) where she participated in the crafting of  their Grande Reserve  wines .

In 2005, after the vintage at the New Zealand family winery, Swan was part of the winemaking team at the famous Clos des Lambray (1er Cru – Burgundy – France) and in 2006, at the world famous Domaine Henri Bourgeois in Sancerre (France).
