The 2013 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru , which had been raised in 50% new oak, but will spend the remainder of its maturation in used, has a glorious bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry and mineral scents, augmented by violets with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, very tense in the mouth, but perhaps just a little conservative toward the finish. - WA90-92
Here too there is plenty of sauvage character adding interest to the cool, attractively pure and distinctly earthy red and dark berry fruit aromas. There is a surprisingly seductive mouth feel to the sleekly muscular yet well-delineated flavors that possess very fine depth on the balanced and only slightly rustic finish. As the typical Mazoyères goes, this is notably finer than usual. - BH91-94
Ben takes a domaine philosophy, focused on establishing and maintaining contracts with growers who work for top quality vines and fruit rather than seeking prestigious appellations. Ben and his team carefully guide the vineyard work, for the most part carried out by the owners. Vines are plowed and are at least lutte raisonnée, while many are organic or biodynamic. When Ben deems necessary, his team carries out green harvest themselves. All vines are harvested by Ben’s team and grapes are sorted at the winery in Beaune. Ben’s cuverie is fit with state of the art equipment.
