This producer has made an outstanding Barolo 2009—no easy feat in this vintage. This bottling is made from top vineyards in Barolo and La Morra. It has a gorgeous bouquet of rose, leather and a whiff of tar. The palate delivers a hint of carob, spice and succulent black cherry notes. Impeccably balanced, this is elegant and complex. A textbook Barolo. - WE95
The 2009 Barolo (aged three years in botte grande and one year in bottle) opens with a crystalline, ruby color and shows extreme focus and precision. Rosehip, forest berry, wild mint, lightly toasted pine nut, dried ginger and underbrush all appear on the ever-changing bouquet. The wine is extremely finessed and silky on the close with beautiful menthol freshness at the end. In Barolo tradition, fruit was normally sourced from many vineyards. The concept of single vineyards is relatively new. In keeping with tradition, this Barolo sees fruit from the Canubbi, San Lorenzo, Rue, and Rocche di La Morra vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035. Drink:2015~2035 - WA94+
An elegant version, with strawberry and cherry flavors that take on accents of tobacco and black tea. Vibrant and juicy, delivering a long, refreshing finish. Needs time for the tannins to soften. Best from 2017 through 2030. - WS92
Bartolo Mascarello is a revered wine producer in Piedmont, Italy. The estate was founded in 1918 and brought to prominence by the eponymous Bartolo, and is now run by his daughter Maria-Teresa Mascarello. It is particularly known for its Barolo, and for having resisted the more recent fashion for single-vineyard releases. Elegant and floral with great finesse, it continues to be considered among Barolo's greatest wines, and fetches some of the highest prices in the appellation.
The Mascarello estate is located in the Barolo village, with just 5 hectares (12 acres) of vines made up of small parcels in the San Lorenzo and Rue vineyards, and Rocche del Annunziata in La Morra. The lone Barolo is a blend of these different crus. Bartolo Mascarello also makes some Dolcetto and Barbera wines.
The winemaking style remains very traditional, with vinification in old cement and wooden vats and no temperature control. The Barolo is aged in traditional 2500 litre Slavonian oak botte for three years, followed by 12 months in the bottle before release. Production is tiny with only around 1250 cases of Barolo produced each year. - Information from Wine Searcher
