Rolf Binder is a wine producer in the in the Barossa Valley, founded in 1955 by Austrian immigrant Rolf Heinrich Binder. It produces a collection of wines from grapes like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro and Riesling in a range of styles.
Grapes are sourced from the Binder Family Estate which cover 64 hectares (160 acres) in the Barossa and neighboring Eden Valley. The former is planted to red grapes and is particularly famous for its Shiraz, which is easily Rolf Binder's specialty. The latter is known for its Riesling grapes, although there are plantings here of Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer that are all well-suited to the cooler climate.
The flagship is the Hanisch Shiraz, produced from old vines only in the very best years. Grapes are sourced from the Veritas Estate Chri Ro Vineyards, purchased by the family in 1968. A small plot was found to be producing expressive grapes with intense aromas and flavors, and eventually became the Hanisch. The wine is aged in both French and American oak, and only 500 or so cases are produced in the years that it is made.
Rolf Binder makes a range of other red and white wines, including several made from Shiraz, both varietal and blended with varieties like Mataro and Grenache. The Rolf Binder Riesling is sourced from the Eden Valley which will happily cellar for a decade or so.
The winery was known as Veritas Winery until 2005, when it was changed to honor the founder who passed away in 2003. Today, his children Rolf Jnr and Christa Binder are in charge of winemaking and production. - Information from Wine Searcher
