Description

The nose offers cherries, vanilla and toasted coconut over aromas of leather, flint and currants. On the palate, blackberries and dried cranberries emphasize more cherries, while dusty tannins swim in a thick undertow of chocolate and sambuca. Vibrant acidity sets up a long, warm finish. - WE94

Ripe and opulent, boasting macerated cherry, plum, eucalyptus and iron flavors matched to a muscular structure. Shows beefy tannins that take over on the finish, yet this feels balanced, with a beam of cherry persisting through the conclusion. Best from 2026 through 2043. - WS92

A certified organic wine, the Camigliano 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is medium dark in appearance with round and ripe aromas of cherry confit, blackberry tart, black rose and balsam herb. The wine is textured and rich; however, the alcohol is too high at 15%. That power takes away from the long-term potential of delicate Sangiovese and places the grape into a near or medium-term drinking window instead. Drink: 2024~2037 - WA91

CAMIGLIANO CASTLE

The castle, a fortified homestead, had already made a name for itself in the 13th century with consistent demographic growth, and, in 1278, there were reportedly 150 families.

After depending on the Abbey of Sant’Antimo for a period of time, during the year 1200 Camigliano was lured into the orbit of Siena, and, in the following years, the heads of some of the most important families (Gallerani, Bonsignori) carried out a great newly-noble patrimonial expansion destined to displace the lay people and clergy and to suppress the growing success of the small country property.

Noble presence is felt even in Camigliano which passes under the authority of these families for many years in the 13th century, but the fact remains that the local community would never disappear from the populous Castle of Camigliano, where a strong rural component seems to have maintained its own vitality for some centuries.

The current manor house was built inside the entry gate (called “Borgone”) of the old “castle” making the most of the ancient walls that surrounded the homestead. The symbol of Camigliano: the camel, found on a seal dating to the 13th century, can perhaps be connected to the influence of the papacy in the area, and there is speculation of connection to the movements of the Crusades that reached the Holy Land.

THE HISTORY OF THE FAMILY

The company purchased in 1957 by the father of the current owner, with Gualtiero has obtained, from the end of the 80s, a radical improvement with the implementation of new vineyards (about 100 ha out of 500 ha among olive trees, scrub and arable land), the construction of a new underground cellar, the purchase of selected barrels, used and dosed in different ways, and of concrete vats.

Gualtiero, helped by new and valid collaborators, has changed the organization of the company whose activity is the result of coordination between the campaign and the cellar, sales and communication.

The new vines were planted using clonal selections tested at Pisa’s University. The winemaking techniques are oriented towards the pursuit of excellence with the purchase of French oak barrels of 30 and 60 hl; the grape selection process is carried out manually both in the countryside and in the cellar with the most innovative methods (oshillys) to obtain an optimal harvest.

The vineyards today are all organic. Do not forget the tasting cellar and the renovation of old farms and houses in the village to welcome wine lovers. The vineyards are located in the same area with an extension of approximately 100 hectares but the altitude changes from area to area and the vineyards are all at an altitude between 250-270 meters above sea level. The geological characteristics are different: some soils are silty sand, others clayey, others with fossils and marl. About 300,000 bottles of Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino, igt Poderuccio, Gamal vermentino and Gamal rosa igt, organic Dop Terre di Siena oil and Grappa from the Brunello vineyards are produced. - Information from Camigliano Website
