Description

A very ripe yet still acceptably fresh nose speaks of menthol, spice and liqueur-like black raspberry aromas. There is very good volume to the reasonably well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a mocha-infused finish that noticeable wood and warmth can be found. This is a wine to watch as it ages because while it has the stuffing to reward 6 to 10 years of cellaring, I do wonder if it might become heavy as it does so. Drink: 2026+ - BH87~89

Grown a stone's throw from Clos de Vougeot, Les Amoureuses and Le Musigny, Vougeot wines are obviously strongly akin to these illustrious growths. The fact that only a small quantity is produced gives it a special cachet.

To the Eye: Its colour is deep and luminous, with a purplish-violet tint which reveals the intensity of this wine.

On the Nose: The aromas evoke violets and red and black fruits (raspberries, Morello cherries, mulberries, blackcurrants) and sometimes cocoa. Like the deep red of its colouring they imbue it with finesse and render it highly seductive. As this wine ages its suggests woodland undergrowth, with scents of dead leaves and truffles mingled with animal notes.

In the Mouth: The mouth is generally pleasing, affording a true guarantee of its origins. It is solidly structured but its tannins have a certain delicacy and its attack is very pure. Its fleshiness and acidity form a simple and very pleasing harmony. From time to time a hint of liquorice is perceptible. Le Vougeot premier cru is a racy wine with points in common with Chambolle Musigny. The well-drained pebbly soil on which it grows makes this a perfumed and elegant wine.- Winemaker's Notes

The Winery

The village of Vosne Romanee entered in the Burgundy history in 636. It was at the beginning of the XVII century that is first noted the name "Mongeard" in the registry. For more than eight generations, the Mongeard family has been established in Vosne Romanee, right in the midst of the Cote de Nuits, producing wine with an utmost respect for tradition.

Since then and through all the generations, the family is committed to their passion: Vine and Wine. The Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, renamed since 1945, now operates a large vineyard in the purist of the burgundy tradition, My grand-father was Eugene Mongeard and my grand-mother Edmee Mugneret.
