An attractive mix of sweet fruit, oak spice and dense, ripe tannins set the stage for blackberry, bilberry, vanilla and fruitcake flavors. The tannins are firm, but this is beautifully balanced and very long and spicy. Best from 2010 through 2022. - WS93
Smoky black tea, beef bouillon, raw venison, biter cherry pit and ripe blackberry make for a striking nose to Liger-Belair's 2009 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges. Firm in feel, and with its dense meat and bitter-edged black fruit underlain by a sensation of crushed stone, this manages to avoid austerity – and, more remarkably, opacity – thanks to its primary juicy freshness; sweet, high-toned inner-mouth esters suggestive of distilled fruits; and to a wealth of mineral nuances (marine, crustacean, peaty) that manage to shine through in a penetrating and resplendent finish. I would not plan to revisit it for a couple of years, and expect it will be worth following for at least 8-10. Drink 2009-2019.- WA93
An extremely subtle and, at this juncture, relatively inexpressive nose of ripe black pinot fruit and violet notes that are in keeping with the supple flavors that are perhaps not quite as concentrated as one might prefer but this is undeniably classy and delivers fine finishing punch, energy and backend persistence. Solid if not profound. Drink:2013+ BH89~91
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair's portfolio of domaine wines (vineyards owned by the estate) covers ten wines from six different appellations, including Vosne-Romanée (the Richebourg Grand Cru and Aux Réas), Vougeot (the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot), Nuits-Saint-Georges (Premier Cru Les Saint-Georges and the La Charmotte site) and Gevrey-Chambertin (the La Croix des Champs vineyard). The estate also makes a Bourgogne Aligoté.
In all, the domaine owns around seven hectares (17 acres) of vineyard land. It also makes wines from a range of grower vineyards in the appellations of Corton, Aloxe-Corton, and Chambolle-Musigny, and Moulin-à-Vent in Beaujolais.
The domaine vineyards are organically certified and biodynamically farmed. Grapes are hand harvested and sorted on arrival in the chai and are generally destemmed with minimal pumpovers/pigeage during fermentation.
However, Thibault Liger-Belair's vinification process can differ from year to year, to year. The wines tend to be aged on their lees in barrel for at least one year and are never fined or filtered.
The Liger-Belair family has a long and storied history in Burgundy and Thibault is the cousin of the Vicomte Liger-Belair in Vosne-Romanée. In 2001 (a year after the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair was founded), Thibault established his domaine in Nuits-Saint-Georges and took back family vineyards that had previously been leased or sharecropped to other estates. - Information from Wine Searcher
