Description

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Rauzan-Gassies rolls out of the glass with expressive notes of baked plums, warm cassis and kirsch plus wafts of cedar chest, oolong tea and lilac. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers loads of perfumed black berry flavors with a fine-grained texture and long, pure finish. Nice! - WA94+

This wine's tannins are firm and bold, giving structure to the juicy black fruits. It has weight while preserving plenty of the Margaux elegance. The wine will age well, so drink from 2024. - WE93

The Winery

Château Rauzan-Gassies is a wine estate in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux. It was classified as a second growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves, and like many wines in the appellation is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant.

The 28-hectare (70-acre) vineyard is located on a combination of deep gravelly soils and sandy gravels. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up around two thirds of plantings, with Merlot and a tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the rest.

Wines are vinified in modern stainless steel vats, with alcoholic and malolactic fermentations happening at the same time. Château Rauzan-Gassies typically spends a year in oak barrels, around a quarter of which are new.

In the 18th Century, the property was a part of the vast Rauzan estate which, by 1855, had been split into châteaux Rauzan-Gassies, Rauzan-Ségla, Desmirail and Marquis de Terme.

Since 1945, Rauzan-Gassies has been owned by the Quié family, who also own Bel Orme and Croizet-Bages. - Information from Wine Searcher
